Before he turned his hand to lycanthropes in An American Werewolf in London, abdominal orifices in Videodrome and shuffling zombies for Michael Jackson’s Thriller, special effects legend Rick Baker lent his talents to the creation of another memorable horror creature - The Incredible Melting Man!
Following a mission to Saturn, Spacecraft Scorpio V has returned to Earth with two of its crew dead and a third, astronaut Steve West, in a critical condition. Critical, that is, until he rises from his bed at the research centre to bite chunks out of the nurse before escaping into the surrounding countryside. The authorities set about trying to track down Steve before he can claim further victims, following the gruesome and messy trail of body parts (including his own!) that he leaves in his wake.
The Incredible Melting Man offers up a wealth of show-stopping B-movie moments in its relatively modest running time – chief among them, a nurse running face-first through a glass door and a disembodied head taking a trip down a waterfall – but the real star of the show here is Baker’s ultra-icky special effects work which allows you to see the Melting Man’s alarming transformation in all its gooey, glistening glory.
