For several years, Earth scientists have been researching the planet Solaris, an organic, apparently sentient entity surrounded by a plasma ocean. But of the 85 members of the space station floating freely above the Solaris ocean, only three remain alive, suffering from a hallucinatory syndrome. Psychologist Kris Kelvin is tasked with investigating the phantom phenomena on the space station and, in doing so, confronts his own past.
