Tom Selleck landed his first major role as an alcoholic pilot in adventure classic High Road To China, directed by Brian G. Hutton (Where Eagles Dare), and also starring Bess Armstrong, Wilford Brimley, Robert Morley and Brian Blessed. 

A hard-drinking biplane pilot teams up with a spoiled heiress in 1920s China to find her missing father, only to get caught up in a deadly clash with a ruthless warlord.

Loosely inspired by the novel by Jon Cleary, High Road To China features an original score by composer John Barry, and was nominated for two awards at the 1984 Saturn Awards.
