After a nuclear war, the survivors live in underground shelters and bunkers. They only venture into the irradiated outside world wearing gas masks and protective suits, searching for a few supplies. A professor writes letters to his missing son Erik, posing hypothetical questions about the future of humanity and whether the nuclear war was global or localized. After his wife Anna dies of radiation sickness and there seems to be no hope left for those languishing in the bunkers, the professor cares for unwanted orphans and teaches them the meaning of humanity.
