Japan in the 16th century: The once feared prince Hidetora Ichimonji decides to divide his kingdom among his three sons, Taro, Jiro, and Saburo, and appoints the eldest, Taro, as his successor. But Saburo resists, accusing his father of having built his empire on intrigue and prophesying that the family will fall apart. Hidetora banishes him – unaware of how right he would be.
At the age of 75, legendary director Akira Kurosawa (THE SEVEN SAMURAI; YOJIMBO) delivered another cinematic epic – and the most expensive Japanese film of all time to date. With visionary visual power and virtuoso editing, he tells a parable of lust for power, betrayal, and nihilism, skillfully combining an old folk tale with elements from Shakespeare's "King Lear." In 1986, the film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Director, and won for Best Costume Design.
