Lichdom: Battlemage is a first-person action game with RPG elements where the focus is centered around casting and combining different spells. The player is given control of an mage with infinite power that can cast spells without any need of mana or rest.

Based on the player's choice of gender, the story is told in a specific way that revolves around the character's personality. The story remains mostly the same but the roles of the two characters are swapped out. The story is rather generic and revolves around the dragon (the spellcaster) and the gryphon (the scout) who seek revenge after the cult of Malthus killed his wife and took her sister.
