The courtesan Julia throws the strict Florence into a frenzy of passion: Cesare, the lord of the city, falls in love with her, but she prefers his son Lorenzo. Cesare then has Julia tortured and Lorenzo kills the father. Florence succumbs to licentiousness and lust. Even the church gets in a frenzy. The hermit Francis urges contemplation and penance, but he too eventually falls for the beautiful courtesan...
