Like Godard’s films, we see wild jump cuts and plenty of handheld shots. There is also an ever-changing overhead narration between Blackie, an FBI agent, and an unseen announcer.

The matter of fact blending of sci-fi and juvenile delinquent films is also aided by some energetic performances from the cast that references the films of John Waters, Doris Wishman, Russ Meyer, and even some Herschell Gordon Lewis styled gore. It feels like a color version of all those lovely sexploitation films in Something Weird Video’s catalog. The pacing never lets up so there is no time to really worry about the story.

The story is the only real problem with the movie. The world of the aliens and the rules they follow are not really explained. So some plot points come up and feel head-scratchingly out of place. The dialog and wacky nature of the movie keep it from being lost in these details. This is a mood piece and a tribute to a specific era of low budget weirdness. Motorcycles are deafeningly loud, while cars are quiet. Some of the film’s ADR work is even more noticeable with a couple of moments of background (The worst one around the 7-minute mark). The dialog is mostly level with the expectation of some moments when the film’s soundtrack cuts in. The numerous songs never become overpowering. Easily one of the most brainbreaking sensory overloads in exploitation history, the story follows Dr. Humpp and his army of grotesque monsters as they kidnap couples and drain their “blood forces of sex” to keep the doctor eternally young. Directed by the prolific Emilio Vieyra in Argentina, this movie combines artful gothic horror with unhinged sex, comic book pulp, and a talking brain in a jar. Plus a monster who plays the guitar. Basically, this is what might have happened if Mario Bava collaborated with Doris Wishman after an acid binge. AGFA + Something Weird are thrilled to present a brand new restoration of this iconic sex-horror classic, complete with a new commentary track from filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE). Produced somewhere in South America and remixed for American audiences by New York producer Charles Abrams, LOVE AFTER DEATH is a joyously deranged gem that features equal doses of gothic horror, sleazy melodrama, and absurdist experimentation. After watching this movie, you'll never look at Edgar Allan Poe's "The Premature Burial" the same way again. Shot in New York by LOVE AFTER DEATH producer Charles Abrams and starring adult film princess Jennifer Welles, THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE BEAUTIFUL is an unknown jewel from the bizarro underground. The movie centers around the estate of a politician, where blackmail and scissor-murders go hand in hand with smoking weed and fetish whippings. Traditional Hickploitation films.

Man and Wife, the Backwoods Way! Wealthy old coot Shugfoot Rainey wants to trade in his over-the-hill mistress for his young niece, "Baby Doll" Jonelle, a pouty-faced stripper from New Orleans. But Rainey's mistress, Linda, has a surprise for both: according to Texas law, she's Shugfoot's COMMON LAW WIFE and has no intention of leaving quietly. Jonelle, however, is so eager to get her greedy mitts on Uncle Rainey's loot that she ups the ante by having a moronic moonshiner put cyanide in Shugfoot's whiskey! All of which lead to the two women eventually squaring off in a surprisingly violent showdown. With its small-town setting and hilariously rotten characters, Common Law Wife is an overripe slice of Southern sleaze courtesy of cult director Larry Buchanan, the outrageous auteur of Mars Needs Women! Also included is the feature, "Jennie, Wife/Child," a twenty-year-old is unhappily married to the way-too-old-for-her, Albert Peckingpaw. Jennie is so unhappy she puts the moves on Mario, the hunky hired hand. But when Albert realizes Jennie and Mario have been making' bacon in the barn, he drugs them, chains them in the cellar, and digs their graves. Which is when Lulu Belle, the cheerful "town floozie," unexpectedly pays Albert a visit. From the director of The Sadist and featuring music by Davie Allan and the Arrows, and photography by Vilmos Zsigmond (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Jennie, Wife/Child easily exudes the long-lost charms of an evening at a Carolina drive-in!

Bonus Materials

Archival commentary for Common Law Wife from Director Larry Buchanan

'That's Hickploitation' new feature

Original new commentary for Common Law Wife by Millie De Chirico

Original new commentary for Jennie Wife/Child by Millie De Chirico

Lisa Petrucci from Something Weird Video provides our liner notes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0359/2201/8348/files/backwoods-double-feature-common-law-wife-jennie-wifechild-new-blu-ray-760137150558-4025720.jpg?v=1755533448
the-cocaine-fiends-the-pace-that-kills-forbidden-fruit-the-golden-age-of-the-exploitation-picture-vol-16
The Cocaine Fiends / The Pace That Kills (Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture Vol. 16)

<span data-sheets-textstyleruns='{"1":0}{"1":285,"2":{"2":{"1":2,"2":28864},"3":"Calibri","4":12,"6":1}}{"1":304,"2":{"2":{"1":2,"2":28864},"3":"Calibri","4":12}}{"1":432,"2":{"2":{"1":2,"2":28864},"3":"Calibri","4":12,"6":1}}{"1":450,"2":{"2":{"1":2,"2":28864},"3":"Calibri","4":12}}' data-sheets-userformat='{"2":14593,"3":{"1":0,"3":1},"11":4,"14":{"1":2,"2":28864},"15":"Calibri","16":12}' data-sheets-value='{"1":2,"2":"A cocaine-snorting gangster (Noel Madison) lures a small-town waitress (Thelma Daniels) to the big city, where a series of tragedies unfold. This no-budget thriller by self-taught filmmakers has a wildly fragmented style. Its intrusive use of title scrolls, stock footage, and gratuitous nudity make it one of the first true underground films (with a gruesome wink at the eyeball-slicing scene of Un chien andalou). Maniac is presented here in a new 4K restoration, from the original camera negative and other 35mm elements preserved by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and is presented in cooperation long as the limits of nudity and sex on screen were pushed as far as they could go - but never all the way. DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.

Before becoming known as one of the masters of big budget theatrical hardcore under the name Henri Pachard, Ron Sullivan cut his teeth making dark, brooding, and often outrageous sexploitation thrillers which reveled in the macabre as much as they did eroticism. Presented here are a trio of Sullivan's finest early efforts, all newly scanned and restored from 35mm negative materials and on Blu-ray for the first time, from Distribpix. In LUST WEEKEND (1967), Sullivan's directing debut, a naive couple are lured by a group of sadistic perverts to a large country manor where they are subjected to increasingly depraved and violent acts of torture. An unflinchingly grotesque and sublimely weird roughie, Sullivan expertly merges sex and horror through an underground filmmaking aesthetic, which decades later still packs plenty of squirm-inducing jolts. In THE BIZARRE ONES (1968), Sullivan continues his fascination with sexual perversions, focusing on man-hating Deirdre who picks up a young male hitchhiker and lures him to her country dungeon wherein he is subjected to the torments of Dierdre and her equally vicious friends. Featuring appearances from Warhol superstars Taylor Mead and Louis Waldon, this trippy and unusual roughie more than lives up to its title. In SCORPIO 70 (1970), Sullivan tries his hand at a more transitional narrive in this flashback structured story of smuggling, sexual indiscretions, and ultimately murder, all aboard a boat. Featuring an early starring role for Jennifer Welles (Career Bed) in addition to a catchy original soundtrack by James Taylor, this softcore thriller produced by Sam Lake (The Nesting) is at last making its home video debut.

directed by: Ron Sullivan
starring: Claire Adams, John Keeler, Mary Lamay, Eva Piatkowitz, Claire Eclaire, Cherrie Winters, Steve Treadwell, Gary West, Sagg Taras, Jennifer Welles, Stacey Michaels, Michael Hanes, Hollis Solomon, Blaine Quincy, Iris Brooks, Jessica Stuart and Tomba
1967, 1968, 1970 / 220 min (combined) / 1.37:1, 1.37:1, 1.33:1 / English DTS-HD MA 1.0

Additional info:

Region Free Blu-ray

Lust Weekend (68 min) and The Bizarre Ones (72 min) were restored from their original 35mm camera negatives and Scorpio 70 (80 min) was restored from its 35mm blow-up interpositive, and are all presented in their original theatrical aspect ratios

Brand new video interview with Ron Sullivan collaborator Don Walters

An archival video interview with Ron Sullivan

An audio interview between Ron Sullivan and adult film historian Ashley West as featured on The Rialto Report

The original theatrical trailer for Lust Weekend

An archival image gallery

Reversible cover artwork

English SDH subtitles

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0359/2201/8348/files/Ron_Sullivan_Early_Years_STD_Front_2500x_f2f8ffc5-c2e6-4cbc-a115-de0dae483650.webp?v=1780845577
the-pickup
The Pickup

When two bagmen are robbed of $1 million in Las Vegas mob money by a seductive pair of con artists, it triggers a frenzy of violence and vengeance.

THE WORLDWIDE BLU-RAY PREMIERE

Though their collaborations included such exploitation classics as HOUSE ON BARE MOUNTAIN, LOVE CAMP 7, THE THING WITH TWO HEADS and RACE WITH THE DEVIL, this 1969 crime shocker from writer/director/cinematographer Lee Frost and co-writer/producer/star Wes Bishop was thought lost for decades.
