Trailer
"Sweet Movie" is an episodic film that tells of social oppression, consumption and power in two loosely connected storylines. At the centre is the virgin Miss Canada, who is awarded the title of 'purest woman in the world' at a bizarre beauty contest and married to a wealthy but emotionally cold businessman. Unwilling to submit to his image of the perfect wife, she flees and embarks on a journey of sexual and emotional self-liberation. At the same time, the film follows the captain Anna Planeta, who travels through Europe on a ship full of sweets, attracting men and children alike. Her seemingly playful actions turn out to be cruel rituals that symbolize political violence, exploitation and the loss of innocence.
Dušan Makavejev's scandalous cult film is a radical piece of anti-cinema that has lost none of its provocative power to this day. "Sweet Movie" is an excessive, anarchic Gesamtkunstwerk between surreal satire, political allegory and cinematic transgression that attacks bourgeois moral concepts as well as capitalism, sexual norms and ideological power structures. The film shocks, disturbs and fascinates at the same time - with deliberate taboo-breaking, grotesque images and bitter humour. Fiercely controversial, censored and celebrated since its release, "Sweet Movie" is considered a milestone of the transgressive auteur film of the 1970s and an indispensable work for lovers of uncompromising cinematic art.
